(HARTFORD, CT, 4/20/26) — The Connecticut chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-CT), a chapter of the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the official recognition of Eid-ul-Fitr as a district-wide holiday by North Haven Public Schools, marking an important step toward inclusivity, equity, and respect for the district’s diverse student body.
CAIR-CT expressed appreciation to Patrick Stirk, North Haven’s Superintendent of Schools, and the Board of Education for their leadership and commitment to ensuring that all students feel acknowledged, respected, and welcomed. This recognition sends a powerful message to Muslim students and families that their identities and religious practices are valued within the school community.
CAIR-CT emphasizes that this achievement is the direct result of the North Haven community’s sustained efforts—especially the students who courageously spoke up, shared their experiences, and advocated for their right to be recognized. Their voices brought visibility to the real challenges Muslim students face and helped drive meaningful change. We also recognize the many community members and organizers who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes over the past two years to build momentum, engage stakeholders, and ensure this effort remains a priority.
CAIR-CT offers a comprehensive resource, the Back to School Resource Guide to help educators, administrators, and families foster safe and inclusive school environments.
CAIR-CT also offers the Educator’s Guide to Islamic Religious Practices designed to assist teachers, principals, administrators and other educators in formulating and implementing policies and programs that will help to create a supportive academic environment.
“The recognition of Eid as a holiday is more than symbolic—it directly impacts students’ mental health, sense of belonging, and ability to fully participate in both their academic and religious lives without feeling marginalized or excluded,” said Farhan Memon, Chairman of CAIR-CT.
This milestone follows nearly two years of dedicated advocacy and collaboration between CAIR-CT and members of the North Haven community, including parents, students, and local leaders who worked tirelessly to bring about this meaningful change.
“This decision reflects what is possible when communities come together with a shared commitment to equity and inclusion,” said Memon. “Recognizing Eid affirms the dignity of Muslim students and ensures they no longer have to choose between their education and their faith.”
“This has been a true community effort,” said Kurshat, a leading organizer in North Haven. “Families, students, and advocates came together with a unified voice to ensure our children feel seen and respected. Today is a proud moment for all of us.”
“As a resident of North Haven and president of the North Haven Islamic Center, this decision means a great deal to our community,” said Dr. Khaled Muhammed. “It reinforces that our children are valued and that their identity is recognized as part of the fabric of this town.”
“It feels amazing to know that my school recognizes Eid,” said a North Haven student. “Now I don’t have to miss classes or feel different from my classmates. It makes me feel like I truly belong.”
CAIR-CT calls on other school districts across Connecticut to follow North Haven’s example by recognizing Eid as an official school holiday. Districts including Berlin, Cheshire, Meriden, Wallingford, and West Hartford have the opportunity to take similar steps toward fostering inclusive and supportive environments for all students.
CAIR-CT remains committed to working with communities across the state to ensure that Eid is recognized widely and that Muslim students everywhere are afforded the respect and accommodation they deserve.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
